NETWORTH.DOC
Having a net worth statement and analyzing it carefully can often
be a very useful tool. In developing a good financial plan, it's
important to know where you're at now before you can make plans for
the future. A systematic calculation of your net worth is a good first
step toward getting control of your financial life. A net worth
statement can be a help in setting specific goals. For example,
perhaps you should start an investment or savings plan or buy a home
instead of continuing to rent.
Before you use this program, you should consider just what it is
that you want to find out. Literally, net worth is what you could get
in cash for your assets minus your liabilities at a given point in
time. Usually this point in time is the present. But you could also
use a net worth statement to find out what your estimated worth would
be at retirement, if a relative leaves you their fortune or what your
estate would be worth to your survivors. In essence, there are a
multitude of things that a net worth statement can provide you with
when you plug in the appropriate figures.
When getting together the figures for your statement, be sure to
use the market value of the asset instead of its replacement cost.
What something is worth if just the right buyer is found will probably
bring substantially less if an immediate sale is needed.
To use the program, enter NW23 at the DOS prompt. The user will be
prompted to enter the name and address of the person for whoam the
statement is being created. The program will then begin displaying the
categories for your current or liquid assets; and requesting that an
amount be enter after each category. If a category is listed in which
you have no amount to enter, then enter a zero (0) and the printout to
your printer will not display that category.
After the program displays all of the pre-defined categories, you
are asked to list all your other cash value assets. The program allows
the user to define his or her own categories by first entering a short
description of the asset, followed by a dollar amount. If you have
less than 100 categories, or none at all, enter either EXIT or exit
at the ITEM prompt. The program will then move on to the next
liabilities section.
The liabilities section work exactly as did the one for assets.
First you are given some user-defined categories in which to enter all
the loans and debts that are due in less than a year or what are to be
considered your current liabilities. As with the assets section of the
program, if you have nothing to enter then enter EXIT or exit at the
ITEM prompt. This section is then followed by some pre-defined
categories. Again, if no amount is to be entered for that category,
then enter a zero and it will not be printed by your printer.
A summary of your total assets, total liabilities, networth,
solvency ratio, and current ratio will then be printed on the screen.
You will then be prompted to turn on your printer, where a
complete net worth statement will be printed along with your solvency
ratio. A ratio of 1.00 or more indicates that your assets will cover
your liabilities. Many lenders require that this ratio be based on
your current assets and current liabilities. This ratio is reflected
in the heading Current ratio.
At the end of the printing, you will be asked if you would like
another copy of the statement. if you answer 'Y', then be sure that
the print head of your printer is located at the top of a new sheet of
paper. If you answer 'N', you are given the chance to compile a new
net worth statement or exit the program.
